Valerian Root subtly increases the levels gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA contributes to a calming effect in the body. This is the primary active ingredient in the prescription medications of Xanax and Valium. Remember to always consult with your doctor first before starting, changing, or ending any treatment read here or anywhere. Recommended average doseage have been 300 to 600 milligrams (mg) 30 minutes to two hours before bedtime. This is best for insomnia or sleep trouble. This can also be added to a tea and taken about the same time. Studies have shown that it seems to work best after taking it regularly for two or more weeks. For anxiety, 120 to 200 mg have been prescribed three times per day. A last dose has been recommended just before bedtime. The dosage for anxiety is generally lower than the dosage for insomnia. This is because taking high doses during the day can lead to daytime sleepiness. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labels valerian root “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS), but mild side effects have been reported.
Don’t take valerian root for more than a 30 day period.
